As for why many pre-Prohibition whiskey men did not take up the liquor trade later, many were too old to start over, with no heirs interested. Many former distillers had sold their plants or found them in such disrepair after 14 years that the cost and effort needed to bring them back was not seen worthwhile. Some, like the Beam family did return, however, and succeed in a major way.Jack Sullivanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01499431800088809848noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6657913448535983609.post-51386830587575849932021-07-06T01:40:06.663-07:002021-07-06T01:40:06.663-07:00Aloha Mr. Sullivan,
I can't begin to tell you ...Aloha Mr. Sullivan,
I can't begin to tell you how wonderful it was for me to read what you wrote about my family. I had no idea they were as prosperous as they were.
Lucille Carmack Beggs, my paternal Grandmother, was the only person who ever talked about the family. She would mention aunt Nelle a lot, and Kate. I remember the etched glass or crystal ware that she had and this enormous chest of silverware for 12. Funny for a kid born in Hawaii to see a segmented grapefruit spoon. There is something she said about the Hulmans, and I think they were all at the reopening of the speedway. Also my mom, who married my dad during the war, mentioned that the Hulmans had a winter home in Florida where my dad was stationed, and they would have get togethers for the military wives now and again in coconut grove. People were wonderful back then.
I am perplexed by the lack of information concerning these brewers and distillers after prohibition. It might have been an article by you, where I read that these folks were shamed by the powers that be at the time, and laid low. Before this present culture we are experiencing happened, I never would have believed something like that could happen.
My dad Webb Beggs Junior, Went to Punahou school on Oahu, Then went to IU on a swimming scholarship. He was an absolute gentleman, and so was my grandfather. Well loved and respected by all they met.
Thank God for people like you who keep history alive. I truly appreciate what you do. Much Aloha to you, Kenneth Beggs Kenneth Beggshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14350058748297838659noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6657913448535983609.post-56573770910994787672021-07-04T17:49:06.324-07:002021-07-04T17:49:06.324-07:00Kenneth Beggs: Great family. I think I live in a house they may have lived in or at least owned the land. Beggs was a name on an abstract of land my parents owned across the road from the house. The abstract for this property was lost. I've always wondered about the history of this property! AWillishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17977319589021951941noreply@blogger.com
